Conclusions
In the opening sections of this chapter it was suggested that children who are reared by their parents learn that resources are scarce. It is not clear what experiences lead such children to this cognition. It has been speculated that part of the explanation lay in the fact that the parent-reared child had to deal with only one or two central caretakers whose status was markedly superior to its own. For the parent-reared child the source of supply is finite (limited to resources only certain people can supply). The parents are the object of intense observation by the child, and it can see what work the parent must do in order to obtain goods; it can see what yield is realized by a given type of work. According to the model, the cognitions about resources are quite distinct from those which are fostered by peer raising.
Parent-reared children when grown are more likely to see that resources are not only scarce but linked to their own work. The prediction is that their decisions about reproduction will be similarly influenced. Interestingly, the perceptual field that is the basis for estimation of resources will in many cases be the same for parent-reared and peer-reared adults. Yet their cognitions about the availability of resources will be different due to the fact that their experiences have taught them different things.
A consequence of this new kind of family may be a generation adapted for resource competition and low fertility. The other type of family organi-zation appears to foster skill in manipulating others (as a way to obtain resources) and high fertility. To the extent that parental care engenders a characteristic set of cognitions, economic development along a western model should be promoted.
